The answer to that question is a resounding no!
Recently a Suffolk contractor was fined a total of £10,000 plus over £3,500 legal costs for dangerous practices, including providing baby wipes for his workers to do just that, at a farm in Essex.
The contractor did not have the licence required for removing asbestos, despite telling the farm’s owners that he did, and his employees had no training in working with the material. All such work requires a thorough three stage decontamination procedure. Instead the workers were endangered by just being given access to baby wipes and the farm’s cold water hose.
In addition, they were still wearing possibly contaminated overalls when they ate their lunch and wore those same overalls when they left at night, possibly leading to contamination of their homes. It was also found that workers were at risk of falling four metres due to inadequate safety netting and harnessing.
