Wayne Smith has been convicted at Sheffield Crown Court
of defrauding clients and customers out of some £170,000.
Smith was described as the ‘controlling mind’ behind two construction companies, despite being banned from being a company director after a previous bankruptcy. He conspired to defraud 14 victims by taking deposits for construction work which was never carried out or starting but nor completing jobs which he had been fully paid for.
One victim lost £30,000 and another had his home left in an uninhabitable state. Smith was featured on the BBC television programme ‘Cowboy Builders’.
Once again this highlights the need to employ honest, responsible builders. Look for signs that builders are accredited and registered. Regency Contracting in Gloucester, for instance, has numerous national accreditations, including membership of the National House Building Council (NHBC) and Trust Mark. We can also provide numerous testimonials from satisfied customers over the years.
